A Contemporary Copy ~ The Conquered Banner ~

A Contemporary Copy ~ The Conquered Banner ~

Product Information
Handwritten copy of Father Ryan's "The Conquered Banner".  This copy was written by Walter T. Hanes and sent to Mrs. Dr. Thomas Shields. At the end of the poem he writes "This offspring of poetic inspiration without any acknowledged parentage, I chanced to find, and as it wakened in my heart an echo of the feelings which once incited thousands to deeds of daring I seized upon it, with a hope that you who can so truly give expression to the sentiments of song would take it and set it to music. I make no apology for sending the above piece, as I believe it will give you as much pleasure to sing and thrill me to hear it.  With an earnest desire soon to hear it sung and my kindest regards to the Doctor I am Respectly Walter T. Hanes."
Walter T. Hanes enlisted on 5/8/1861 as a Sergeant with Co. I 4th VA Cavalry.
He was hospitalized on 1/23/1863 in Richmond, VA for debility. He was later "Wounded in Head" on 10/4/1864 at Bridgewater, VA.
Thomas P. Shields of Cumberland Co. Virginia enlisted on 4/23/1861 as a 1st LT. with Co. E 18th VA Infantry.  He was promoted to Captain on 7/30/1862. He was absent sick on 8/27/1861 and wounded at Frayser's Farm, VA on 6/30/1862. Due to impaired health, he resigned on 2/13/1863 and received the appointment of Surgeon and served in the hospitals until the end of the war. (Prior to the war he successfully practiced his profession as Physician and Surgeon.)
